The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council will host a two-day National TVET Policy Development Workshop beginning tomorrow, Thursday, November 15, at the Island Inn Hotel, Aquatic Gap, St. Michael, at 8:30 a.m.
Representatives of organizations from the education and training sector, government and the private sector will participate in the discussions and presentations on Day One and the commencement of the drafting of the new National TVET Policy on Day Two.
The deliberations will be guided by Senior Specialist, Skills and Employability with the Decent Work Team/Office for the Caribbean of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Dr. Hassan Ndahi. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Janet Phillips, will address participants.
The TVET Council is the government agency set up to oversee the national technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system. The Council is mandated to plan, coordinate and establish standards and qualifications for TVET and award the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) and the Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ).
It also manages the Employment and Training Fund, which provides grants to employers, business associations and training institutions to train employees to the aforementioned standards and qualifications.
The discipline of TVET is described as education for the world of work. The aims and objectives of the two-day workshop are therefore to produce a National TVET Policy that will create an enabling environment for the development of a competent, certified, competitive workforce in Barbados; promote a demand-driven TVET system; promote quality access and relevance within the national TVET system; guide the allocation of resources for the effective and efficient delivery of TVET; and incorporate sustainable development practices within the TVET system.
