The significant role of planning in the development of communities in Barbados will be highlighted next month when World Town Planning Day is celebrated.

As part of the celebrations, the Town and Country Development Planning Office will host a number of activities between Monday, November 7 and Friday, November 11.

The Office will partner with The Barbados Town Planning Society to stage a half-day symposium titled: Spatial Planning – Improving the Nation’s Health and Wellness, on World Town Planning Day, Tuesday, November 8.

It will be held at the Courtyard by Marriott, Hastings, Christ Church, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The topics to be examined include: Planning for Healthier Lifestyles; Physical Planning and Its Impact on Health; and Wider Choices of Housing for Older People in Barbados.

Presenters will include Lecturer in Data Sciences at the Chronic Disease Research Centre of The University of the West Indies, Dr. Christina Howitt, who managed the Health of the Nation Survey which investigated the causes of non-communicable diseases in Barbados; and Town Planner, Kim Penfold, who has worked for a not-for-profit Housing Association in the UK, and provided housing options for older people. As part of its contribution to Barbados’ 50th Anniversary of Independence, the Town and Country Development Planning Office will, on Wednesday, November 9, unveil a plaque to honour those persons who have contributed 25 years of service or more to the office between 1966 and 2016.  The plaque will bear the names of those dedicated employees.

On Friday, November 11, there will be health checks and a Customer Appreciation Day for staff and the public at the Town and Country Development Planning Office, Block “C”, The Garrison, St. Michael, between 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. For additional information, persons may call 535-3000.

World Town Planning Day is celebrated annually on November 8, in 30 countries.  It is a special day to recognise and promote the role of planning in creating livable communities.
