Barbadians are being encouraged to support activities to commemorate International Museum Day, which will be celebrated next Wednesday, May 18.

The Barbados Museum and Historical Society is currently staging Museums and Memory, a temporary exhibition on the role and history of domestic Barbadian objects. Members of the public may view the exhibits Mondays to Fridays between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. or from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sundays. The presentation will end on Saturday, May 28.

During the week of May 16 and 20, some Barbadians will get an opportunity to find out about their family history when they visit the Eustace Shilstone Memorial Library at the Museum. Those who are interested in this initiative should call Harriett Pierce at 427-0201 or 436-1956 or email library@barbmuse.org.bb for an appointment.

On International Museum Day, Wednesday, May 18, there will be an all-day bus tour leaving the Barbados Museum at 9:00 a.m., with stops at the Museum of Parliament and National Heroes Gallery, the Nidhe Israel Museum, Cricket Legends of Barbados, the Folkestone Marine Museum and the Barbados Olympic Museum.

For additional information on the events, which are being organised by the International Council of Museums’ (ICOM) Executive Committee of Barbados, the public may call the Barbados Museum at 427-0201.

The theme of this year’s International Museum Day is Celebrating Museums and Memory. ICOM is the global organisation of museum professionals who are committed to the conservation, continuation and communication of the world’s natural and cultural heritage, present and future, as well as tangibles and intangibles.
