Advisor to the Prime Minister on Poverty Eradication and the Millennium Development Goals, Hamilton Lashley, today praised corporate Barbados for being actively onboard in his office’s ongoing poverty eradication programme.

He was speaking at the handing-over ceremony of a house at lot 65 Haggatt Hall, St. Michael, the third which was totally constructed as part of the “Carrying Out the Promise Programme.”

The initiative, which is a joint partnership of government, civil society and the private sector, commenced in June last year with an aim of undertaking crucial repairs to 60 houses while totally rebuilding five others.

“Today is a great day, my office remains fully committed to assisting those who are marginalised, to make sure that we achieve our key objective of helping those who cannot help themselves,” he said.

Mr. Lashely noted that he was not of the view that the poor in our society should remain that way forever. “The partnership formed is one of development and being your brother’s keeper. It is necessary if we are to reach the ultimate goal of poverty eradication,” he said.

General Manager of the National Housing Corporation (NHC), George Edghill, who was on hand to witness the handing over said the NHC was pleased to be associated with the project. He revealed that “almost daily various Government Ministries approach the NHC” seeking housing solutions for members of the public and whenever possible the NHC was always happy to assist.

The NHC provided the lot where the house is located.  Mr.  Edghill said that the particular area in Haggatt Hall had been earmarked for persons who were “displaced”.
