Barbados’ judicial system will feature high on the list of priorities for Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Dale Marshall.

Following early discussions with Chief Justice Sir Marston Gibson, Mr. Marshall has disclosed that the court system should expect to see the establishment of specialised courts and the additional appointment of three judges to alleviate the backlog.

The Attorney General made these comments during a recent press briefing at Government House, where he acknowledged that the cleaning of the Supreme Court Complex’s White Park Road, St. Michael location would span a four-month period.

“I have spoken repeatedly in the House of Assembly on the issue of the delays in the court system. The Chief Justice and I will work together to ensure that we eliminate the backlog and establish a framework for going forward,” he said.

He added that the Prime Minister had given the assurance that the integrity of Barbados’ justice system was important enough to receive the resources required so that justice could be delivered.

He explained that there was a provision in the Barbados Constitution that allowed the Governor General to make an appointment of acting judges without having to amend the Constitution immediately.

However, he said to appoint new judges while in temporary accommodation would be impractical and therefore it would be done when the court resumes operations at its White Park Road, St. Michael location.
