Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs, Adriel Brathwaite will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Organisation of American States (OAS) to establish a Drug Treatment Court in Barbados.
The signing will take place on Monday, March 25, at the Office of the Attorney General, Webster Business Park, Wildey, St. Michael, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Mr. Brathwaite will sign the document with Assistant Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission of the OAS, Angela Crowdy.
It is being anticipated that after the signing of the MOU, the OAS will begin to work with the Government of Barbados to put the structures in place to establish the court.
Last June, judges, magistrates, senior public servants, police officers, and a wide range of stakeholders involved in drug treatment and rehabilitation, attended a sensitisation workshop organised by the OAS. The workshop, funded by Canada, explored the feasibility of introducing a Drug Treatment Court model in Barbados.
Drug Treatment Courts have proven to be effective in reducing crime, preventing relapse into drug use and stemming the alarming growth of prison populations. They have also proven to be a cost effective alternative to incarceration.
