The management of agricultural waste in Barbados will come under the microscope when the Ministry of Agriculture and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) host a one-day symposium on that topic, tomorrow, Friday September 3, at the Ministry’s Graeme Hall, Christ Church headquarters.

According to a Ministry official: Within the last two decade, the management of agricultural waste in Barbados has become a particular challenge.?? As the sector has grown, particularly the livestock subsector, and as demographic settlement patterns have evolved, we have witnessed increasing challenges in having adequate and sustainable waste disposal systems.

"We are also addressing related issues, such as pollution of the landscape, the potential for ground water contamination as well as offensive odours experienced by homeowners in close proximity to livestock farms. Therefore, the time has come for us to take a comprehensive approach to sustainable management in the agricultural sector."

To this end, findings of a recent situation analysis will be revealed at the seminar.

Minister of Agriculture, Senator Haynesley Benn, will deliver the feature address at the opening of the symposium on "Sustainable Management of Agricultural Waste in Barbados" in the Ministry of Agriculture’s Conference Room tomorrow, at 9:30 a.m.??tblackman@barbados.gov.bb
