Barbados’ Ambassador to CARICOM, David Comissiong, will deliver the annual Australia Nelson Mandela Lecture on Saturday, July 18.

The lecture, which will be staged virtually, begins at 6:00 a.m. local time to compensate for the 14-hour time difference, and will examine the topic: Reparations and the Nelson Mandela Mission of Transforming and Humanizing Structures of Oppression.

Organised by the Nelson Mandela Day Australia Inc., a Melbourne-based registered social justice organisation, its establishment stemmed from the 2009 UN General Assembly resolution that called upon the world to mark the annual “Nelson Mandela Day” on his birthday,July 18.

The inaugural lecture was delivered at the Victorian State Parliament in 2016 by Professor Penny Andrews, a human rights lawyer, and Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Cape Town.

Since then, other lectures have been given by Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard; indigenous historian Professor Gary Foley; and philanthropist, Rev. Tim Costello.
