Barbados’ Ambassador to Brazil, Yvette Goddard, has been presented with the President Juscelino Kubitschek Medal (Grande Medalha) – for her exceptional service to the community and contribution to the growth of political and governmental institutions, as well as to the development of the country. She received the highest level of award.

Ambassador Goddard was given the honour by the Governor of the State of Minas Gerais, in Brazil, Antonio Anastasia and Maristela Kubitschek, daughter of President Kubitschek, during a special ceremony which was held on September 12.

The ceremony took place in Diamantina, the birthplace of former President Kubitschek to mark the 110th anniversary of his birth. The medal was created on September 5, 1995.

The former President was born on September 12, 1902.?? He was Mayor of Belo Horizonte, the state capital, from 1940 – 1945; Governor of the State from 1951 – 1955; and President of Brazil from 1956 -1961.?? As president, he was responsible for the construction of the new federal capital, Brasilia, which has various monuments and buildings named in his honour. ??

Barbados and Brazil established diplomatic relations on November 26, 1971.
