The Ministry of Labour’s annual GIVE Awards (Great Attitudes, Initiative, Values and Excellence), which recognises public sector workers for their exemplary service, will introduce two new categories to its programme this year.

The ceremony, which comes off this Saturday, February 21, at the Hilton Hotel, Needhams Point, St. Michael at 7:00 p.m. will in addition offer the Spirit of Public Sector Development Award presented by the Office of Public Sector Reform (OPSR) and the National Initiative for Service Excellence (NISE) award.

The OPSR awardee must demonstrate innovative thinking, reliability, helpfulness, a caring attitude, respect for authority, a sense of purpose in career direction and planning and efficiency.

The recipient will be considered an ambassador for public sector reform and will assist the Office of Public Sector Reform in ‘championing’ service delivery in the civil service.

The NISE Award will recognise an individual who has delivered exceptional customer service in the public sector.  To be eligible, persons must demonstrate good communication skills, an ability to satisfactorily resolve customer complaints, exhibit a professional image at all times, and demonstrate acceptable attitudes and behaviour among other qualities.

Thirty-five public officers who exemplify the GIVE standards – dedication, hard work and proper attitudes, will be honoured at the ceremony which is now in its third year. The theme for the evening will be ‘Aspire! Transform! Achieve!’
The GIVE initiative is the Ministry’s contribution to the promotion of service excellence in Barbados.

Its aim is to improve the attitude and work ethic of Barbadian employees and to promote standards of appropriate behaviour in the workplace. GIVE focuses on areas such as attendance/absenteeism, integrity, deportment, performance, communication and customer service.

To be eligible for an award, workers must display the attributes of punctuality, productivity and good deportment.

In addition, they must be cooperative, demonstrate a respect for authority, have good relations with staff and the public and strongly adhere to public sector procedures.

The inaugural GIVE awards ceremony was held in December 2006.
