There will be another opportunity for the public to learn about slavery when another Freedom Footprints: The Barbados Story Heritage Tour is held this Saturday, February 5, starting at 9:00 a.m.

Those participating in the trek will tour slavery-related galleries at the Barbados Museum, before visiting "The Cage", the site of a holding cell for runaway slaves and others who ???misbehaved’; and the Newton Slave Burial Ground, which is the only excavated, communal, slave interment place in a plantation setting in the western hemisphere.

They will also stopover at Bourne’s Land, one of several villages across the island that was developed through property bequests and the process of manumission (freedom), which plantation owners gave to their slave mistresses and children; Sweet Bottom, the oldest non-white village in Barbados; and the Gun Hill Signal Station, constructed mainly to relay information on pending slave revolts.

The Barbados Museum and Historical Society has been contracted by the Ministry of Tourism to conduct the pilot tours. Those persons who are interested in participating should contact the Museum at telephone number 427-0201 to receive information on tickets and other details.
