There is a rare treat in store for lovers of antique furniture over the next six weeks. The Barbados National Committee of International Council of Museums (ICOM) will host an authentic Barbadian antique furniture exhibition at Lancaster Great House, St. James.

The free exhibition, entitled “From the Antique to the Contemporary: Barbados Furniture 1680-2009”, opened last month and continues until Saturday, May 30. It will run Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

ICOM Barbados Treasurer and Curator in History and Archaeology, Kevin Farmer, explained that the exhibition illustrates the origin and evolution of Barbadian furniture, drawing on examples from the 17th century to contemporary times.

He noted that ICOM Barbados, through this presentation, has sought to develop an appreciation among the public of the “excellent artistry and craftsmanship that were invested in the creation of these works of art.”

The display contains several lavish pieces of furniture, such as early English oak riven chests, Spanish cedar armoires, and Barbadian single-ended couches and tub chairs.

Mr. Farmer observed: “It is by no means an exhaustive exhibition, but it serves to highlight the talent of its creators.”
