Barbadians seeking to further their education at the undergraduate or postgraduate level can apply for a 2011 National Development Scholarship, provided through the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development.

The scholarships will be awarded in 13 broad categories. These are Physical Development; Environmental Studies; Allied Health; Medicine in Specialised Areas; Management Studies; Culture; Economics; Legal Studies; Agriculture; Science and Technology; Education and Tourism and Family Services.

In the area of Physical Development, students’ choice of study must be in the field of Geology or Quantity Surveying, while in Environmental Studies, there is Disaster Management and Renewable Energy Technologies.??

With respect to Allied Health, there are six options including Optometry; Podiatry; Gerontology; Rehabilitation Therapy; Disability Studies and Forensic Nursing. And, students interested in Medicine in Specialised Areas will be considered if their choice is in Diabetics/Endocrine; Pediatric Cardiology and Urology.

Under Management Studies, individuals may be selected from among those who express interest in Airport Management; Environmental Management in Civil Aviation; Procurement Management; Public Private Partnership; Statistics; E-Government Security; Port Management and Entrepreneurship.

Students interested in a scholarship in Culture Studies should have considered Archival Science; Library and Information Science; Theatre Management/Animation; Heritage and Museum Management and Curatorship.

Scholarships in Economics will be offered in either Development Economics or Economic Planning, while those in Legal Studies are in International Property and Copyright Law; Maritime Law/Boundary Delimitation or International Politics/Relations.

The National Development scholarship may also be awarded to a student who is keen on Genetics, Plant Pathology and Entomology if that individual’s interest is in Agriculture. ??In the field of Science and Technology, a study programme can be in Innovation, Information, Science and Technology or Computer Science.

For candidates interested in the field of Education, consideration will be given to Measurement and Assessment; Special Needs; Competency Based Curriculum Design and School Psychology.

Tourism-oriented candidates for the scholarship will be chosen from the options of Marketing in Tourism; Cultural Heritage Tourism and Disaster and Tourism Management. And, those with an interest in Family Services may choose from among Crisis Management; Social Policy and Planning; Forensic Child Abuse Management and Therapeutic Work with Children/Play Therapy.

Applicants must be citizens of Barbados between the ages of 18 and 40 and should have been accepted at an overseas University other than the University of the West Indies to pursue studies in the particular course.

The scholarship covers direct economy class passage to the country of study at the commencement of the course, and return passage to Barbados on completion. It includes full tuition fees, payable directly to the University; a book allowance of

$1000 as well as a clothing allowance of $736 Bds for those studying in temperate countries. Both allowances will be disbursed once.

The Ministry will also provide a Living Allowance of Bds $6,300 ??per annum for studies in the USA; Bds $5,880 per annum for studies in Canada or Bds $7,560 per annum for studies in the United Kingdom.

Successful applicants will be required to enter a bond with sureties to return and work in Barbados on completion of the course. This will be based on one year for each year of the award or part thereof.
