Barbadian citizens can now apply for the award of a Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan to the United Kingdom (UK) for the 2015 academic year.

The Government of Britain is offering the scholarships at postgraduate level to students who intend to pursue a one-year taught Master???s only, or a doctoral degree of three years??? duration.

Applicants must be citizens of Barbados and be able to take up their award in October 2015. Deferments will only be granted in the most exceptional circumstances and these applicants will not be considered for start dates beyond January 2016.

Candidates for Master???s awards who have undertaken any of their university education outside their home country, will be asked to state how it was funded and how the education differed from that in their home country.??Those applying for doctoral studies must provide the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK with evidence of support from a prospective supervisor from at least one of their chosen institutions in the UK at the time of application.

Candidates should by October 2014, hold a first degree or equivalent qualification with at least upper second class honours; or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification, which will normally be a Master???s degree. Candidates are expected to submit independent applications directly to their chosen institution in the UK. Formal offers of admissions should also be included with the application.

Confidential references (not testimonials) must be forwarded to the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation specifically relating to the candidate???s suitability for the planned studies.Candidates are expected to state up to three preferred institutions on the application form; however, the final decision on host institution will be made by the Commission.

The award will cover student concessionary or other approved airfare to the UK and return on expiry of the scholarship (the cost of journeys made before final award confirmation will not normally be reimbursed, nor can fares be paid for a scholar???s dependents). It will also cover approved tuition and examination fees and a personal maintenance allowance at the rate of ??882 per month (??1091 per month for those studying at institutions in the London Metropolitan area).

One completed application form should be submitted to the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Elsie Payne Complex, Constitution Road, St. Michael, no later than Friday, October 24, 2014.??Candidates are also required to submit a completed application online to the Commission no later than Wednesday, December 3, 2014.
