Government will be soon be moving to appoint new judges to assist with the backlog of cases in the Supreme Court.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Dale Marshall, said the Judicial and Appointments Committee, through its Chairman, Sir David Simmons, was expected to make recommendations to Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley in the coming days.

He was at the time engaging journalists during the Annual General Meeting of the Barbados Association of Journalists and Media Workers at the Embassy of the Argentine Republic on Sunday evening.

Noting he could not disclose who the new judges would be, Mr. Marshall said he was happy to see that there was “tremendous interest locally and regionally” in the opportunity for appointment to the Barbados Bench.

“For many years, Barbadians served in high judicial office and the outer office of the Commonwealth…. I think it is important for us as we try to recruit new judges in a transparent process to reach out to the entire Commonwealth to try to bring back to Barbados the best minds that we can find so that we can grapple with the issues of the courts,” he stated. During the elections, Emmanuel Joseph was re-elected to the post of President; Ryan Broome, Vice President; Rachel Agard, General Secretary; Marlon Madden, Treasurer; Deanzer Roberts, Public Relations Officer; and Christina Smith, Admiral Nelson and Trevor Thorpe, Floor Members.
