This is the message the National Conservation Commission (NCC) is sending out, as it prepares to host a special plant propagation workshop in recognition of Arbor Day,?? which is designated to promote the importance of trees and encourage ??tree planting.??

The workshop is slated to take place on Saturday, September 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the NCC’s Codrington, St. Michael headquarters.

According to the NCC’s Special Projects Officer, Ricardo Marshall, "the initiative is in keeping with the Ministry of the Environment’s wider mandate to achieve a greener Barbados. It will focus on basic??propagation techniques, how persons may use trees to raise the aesthetics of their surroundings and generally to promote a healthier environment through a practical interactive session.

"Many plants can be propagated easily using very basic tools and methods. It’s a lot of fun and definitely within the ability of??every home gardener," Mr. Marshall underlined.

Plant propagation is the process of multiplying or increasing the number of plants of the same species, and, at same time, perpetuating their desirable characteristics. It aims to: retain the desirable characteristics of the mother plants; increase or multiply the number of plants rapidly; shorten the bearing age of plants, especially in fruit trees; ??prevent the plant species from being lost or extinct; and produce superior strains and disease-resistant plants that will be best suited under given climatic and soil conditions.

Persons interested in participating in the session are asked to contact Ricardo Marshall at the NCC at 425-1200.

Arbor Day will be observed on Wednesday, September 22, under the theme:?? "Trees: The Circle of Life".?? cgaskin@barbados.gov.bb
