“Art for Export”, an exhibition of works of art which have been representative of  Barbados abroad, will be launched by the National Art Gallery this Sunday, November 11.  It will come off at the Zemicon Gallery, Hincks Street, Bridgetown, at 6:30 p.m.

The initiative for the exhibition is the result of the reviews of “Infinite Island” – an exhibition of contemporary Caribbean art hosted by the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York, and the realisation that the Barbadian community is ready to revisit the discourse about the international representation of Caribbean art.

According to a member of the National Art Gallery Committee, the curatorial approach to the exhibition was experimental in that the exhibition was viewed as an appendix to the accompanying catalogue.

“The catalogue publicises a number of questions addressed to Barbadian artists and curators whose work or selections are featured in this show, as well as their responses and comments,” the member explained.

The exhibition will be open to the public until December 7 at the Zemicon Gallery and Bagnall’s Point Gallery, Pelican Village, Princess Alice Highway. The galleries are open from Tuesday to Friday, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

The public is also invited to the “Art for Export” forum on Sunday, November 25, at Bagnall’s Point Gallery, to discuss the issues raised in the catalogue.
