In an effort to boost the number of patrons attending Agrofest 2012, organisers, the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS) will be introducing several new activities to its opening day line-up, on Friday, February 24.

According to Chief Executive Officer of the BAS, James Paul, "On the Friday evening we are looking to do additional entertainment… Friday evenings tend to be the time we have the lowest attendance.?? We are trying to introduce some events which we hope would increase the number of patrons attending. We are trying to increase the attractiveness of the event on Fridays, so it would just not be the school children," he pointed out.

The gates will be open to students at 10:00 a.m. to tour the various exhibits, while the general public will have their chance at 4:00 p.m. In addition, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the National Taskforce on Physical Activity and Exercise will be conducting a line dancing exercise.

One of the highlights of the opening day will be an Evening of Culinary Excellence, where some 300 Barbadians will have an opportunity to taste the best of local cuisine prepared by renowned local chef, Peter Edey.

The event, which is being organised by the BAS in collaboration with Caribbean Cuisine, will feature a six-course meal of Barbadian classics made entirely from local produce. It will commence with cocktails at 7:00 p.m.

Bookings for an Evening of Culinary Excellence may be done by contacting the Agrofest Secretariat, c/o The Barbados Agricultural Society, The Grotto, Beckles Road, St. Michael at 436-6683, fax number 435-0651, email address agrofest@caribsurf.com or by visiting the website www.basonevoice.org.

The Royal Barbados Police Force will also have their Floodlight Tattoo from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the main pasture.

Following dinner under the stars and the tattoo, local reggae lovers will have a feast as some of the island’s finest reggae artistes will perform at Reggae in the Park. It will take place from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Among the acts scheduled to perform are Daniel, LRG, Hotta Flames, Brimstone, Paul Lavine and the backing band is Fully Loaded.

Agrofest, which is in its seventh year, will run from February 24 to 26 in Queen’s Park and will have as its theme Renewable Energy: Powering Agriculture to Success.
