Six schools will participate in the inaugural National Secondary Schools Debate Competition organised by the Barbados Accreditation Council (BAC) which is scheduled to be held next month.

They are Alexandra, Frederick Smith Secondary, Harrisons College, Princess Margaret, Springer Memorial and The St. Michael School.

The event comes off at the Barbados Public Workers??? Cooperative Credit Union???s (BPWCCU) headquarters, Belmont Road, St. Michael. The preliminary rounds will take place on November 5, 6 and 7 from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. in the Training Room of the BPWCCU; and the finals on November 27.

Students will address the topic: The Integration of Technology in the Classroom Increases Student Engagement during the preliminary rounds while the topic for debate during the Finals will be The Extensive Use of Social Media Has a Negative Impact on the Quality of Written Expression.

According to BAC, secondary school students have been targeted in order to sensitise them about the concept of quality assurance. ???The debate provides another means of sensitising the younger generation to the roles and functions of the Council, and offers to further educate the general public about quality assurance in education and training in Barbados and beyond,??? said a BAC official.

Students will be required to research issues, organise and analyse data, make references from the data, reason, recognise and critique different methods of reason, and comprehend decision-making processes.

The debating competition is a continuation of the Council???s community outreach programme which has included information sessions with fourth and fifth formers to provide important one-on-one interaction and offer opportunities to address queries and disseminate vital information.

Members of the public are invited to attend the debates.
