Occupational Health and Safety will take the spotlight next week when the Barbados Agricultural Management Company (BAMC) hosts a week of activities under the theme, Safety First for the Continuity of Life and Healthy Living.

The week of activities will get under way this Sunday, September 14, at 9:00 a.m. with a Church Service at the St. Thomas Parish Church.

The official ceremony for the week commences on Monday, September 15, at 9:00 a.m. at the Grand Barbados Hotel, and this will be followed by a one-day seminar.   Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development and Culture, Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner, will deliver the feature address on the topic, Managing Safety and Health in a Contemporary Workplace.

The seminar will commence with a presentation on  ‘Safety and Health at Work Act (2005) and Safety Committees’ by Deputy General Secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union, Orlando Gabby Scott, from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon.

In the post-lunch session, BAMC’s Company Secretary, Victoria Bowen, will address the pertinent issue when she speaks on the topic Managing Safety and Health , Are you Aware?.

The Right to refuse Dangerous Work will be the focus of the final session, slated to take place from 2:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. It will be presented by Safety and Health Officer with the Occupational Safety and Health Section of the Labour Department, Allison Elcock.  All sessions will be held at Grand Barbados.

On Tuesday, September 16, a series of fire and road safety presentations will be held at factories across the island. The first two will take place simultaneously at the Andrews and Carrington factories beginning at 9:00 a.m. In the afternoon, Mechanisation Services Manager at Carrington Factory, Glen Clarke, will make a presentation on Highway and Road Safety, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The fire safety and environmental presentations will continue on Wednesday, September 17.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. fire safety presentations will be held simultaneously at the Sugar Terminals at the Bridgetown Harbor and Hayman’s Factory. Meanwhile, Portvale Factory and the Sugar Terminals will be the sites for the first two environmental presentations to be held simultaneously from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Another environmental presentation is slated to be held at Hayman’s, St. Peter at 1:30 p.m.

During the afternoon, staff from Andrew’s Factory will have the opportunity to benefit from various health checks when nurses from the Maurice Byer Polyclinic in St. Peter conduct blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol screening.

On Thursday, September 18, at 9:00 a.m. the BAMC will launch its Health and Safety Recognition Scheme at Grand Barbados and this event will be followed by a series of health/environmental presentations at factories in Areas 1 and 2. The schedule is as follows:  Carrington’s Factory 9:00 a.m. – 12:00(noon’, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, NULL, NULL, 0); Portvale, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 (noon’, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, NULL, NULL, 0); Andrew’s Factory, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 (noon) and Hayman’s, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

A presentation on Assessing Risks targeting senior staff and safety committees will be held at Grand Barbados between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.; while another on  Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Its Maintenance is scheduled for Andrew’s Factory between 12:00 (noon) and 1:00 p.m.

On Friday, September 19, the final fire safety presentations will be held at the BAMC’s Warrens Office between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., followed by health checks at 10:00 a.m.

The curtain comes down on the week of activities on Saturday, September 20, with a staff karaoke and barbecue from 6:30 p.m. until midnight.
