Barbados’ Principal Delegate to the Organisation of American States/Inter-American Commission on Women (OAS/CIM), Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner, will be vying for the post of Vice-President to the CIM at the 35th Assembly of Delegates scheduled for November 2 to 5, in Mexico City, Mexico.
The CIM is a permanent specialised organisation of the OAS, whose principal forum is to generate hemispheric policy to advance women’s rights and gender equality.?? Through its influential role within the OAS, CIM provides support and recognition to national women’s movements throughout the Americas, and fosters inter-American cooperation.
Once elected, Senator Sandiford-Garner will contribute to the development of policies that affect and address gender issues in the hemisphere, and add the Caribbean’s perspective to these issues.?? Her election will also maintain a Barbadian presence on the executive of regional and international influential institutions, and will significantly benefit the island when its social development programmes are being formulated.
Barbados last held an executive position on the CIM in 1992 when the then Principal Delegate, Maizie Barker-Welch was President. sharifa.medford@barbados.gov.bb
