Barbadians are being encouraged to "give back" to their communities by participating in Government’s project to beautify the homes of those senior citizens who have no one to help them.

Principal Youth Development Officer, Colin Clarke, is urging various youth, church and uniformed groups, members of social and cultural clubs, and families to get involved in the programme.

Mr. Clarke said: "This is an excellent project for families and young Barbadians to engage in, as it promotes the forging of inter-generational linkages which strengthen communities, since young ones learn about looking out for their neighbour, something that is sadly lacking in some districts across the island."

Persons interested in volunteering for the Give Back Programme should contact the Ministry of Youth at telephone numbers 430-2799 and 430-2813.

Since the project’s inception one year ago, 103 houses have been completed and several others are currently being repaired.

Mr. Clarke noted that within recent months, the Pathfinders of the Seventh Day Adventist Church had been working, nearly exclusively, on the homes. He lauded their self-sacrificing spirit, stating: "The fact that these young people are taking time from their already hectic schedule to paint the homes on Sundays shows we have persons in our community who still care and want to give back."

He disclosed that during the Christmas recess, trainees of the Barbados Youth Service and Unit 14 of the Garrison Secondary School’s Cadet Corps would assist with the painting.??saustin@barbados.gov.bb
