The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development has renewed its call for Barbadians to participate in the current town hall meetings aimed at formulating a new Education Policy.

According to Administrative Officer in the Ministry’s Research and Planning Department, Cyril Burke, “government is seeking to create a new thrust in education; so, we are encouraging people to come out and contribute to the dialogue.”

He observed that the public’s participation was vital to the process of creating a way forward for education in Barbados.  “We want the public to have the opportunity to participate fully in the discourse. While we have been getting reasonable responses, we are hoping that more people will come out and be a part of the process,” he said.

Topics to be discussed at the meetings include co-education, substance abuse and negative sub-cultures, discipline in schools, quality education for students with special needs, student transfer-from primary to secondary school and violence in schools.

The remaining  meetings  are scheduled to take place on the following dates: May 3, Grantley Adams Memorial School,  May 6, Garrison Secondary School;  May 8, Barbados Community College;  May 17, Queens College; May 20, St. David’s Parish Church Hall;  May 24, The Alleyne School; June 3, Gall Hill Community Centre; June 5, St. James Secondary; June 7, St. Lucy Secondary; June 17, Lester Vaughan School;  June 19, St. Michael School; and  June 21, Princess Margaret Secondary School.
