Barbados will observe Tourism Week from Tuesday, December 13, to Monday, December 16.

Co-ordinated by the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, the Barbados Tourism Authority, the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA), the Barbados Workers??? Union and Caves of Barbados Limited, Tourism Week is being held under the theme, Achieving Success through Service Excellence.

The week???s theme was chosen to reflect the need for excellence in every area of the tourism industry-products, services and people. It also addresses the link between excellent service and the sustainability of Barbados??? tourism industry.

It will begin on Tuesday, December 10, with the launch of the official Barbados Island Guide at the Radisson Aquatica Resort, Aquatic Gap, Bay Street, St. Michael. Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Richard Sealy, will give remarks at 8:30 a.m.

The Youth Forum entitled Come Experience Tourism: The Other Perspective will be staged at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. Starting at 9:00 a.m., the forum is designed to expose the youth to non-traditional areas within the industry. Junior Tourism Minister, Kezia Forde, and former Junior Tourism Minister, Jason Yearwood, will participate in the discussions.

On Wednesday, December 11, at 8:00 a.m. the BHTA will host its quarterly meeting at Hilton Barbados, Needhams Point, St. Michael.

The next day, Thursday, December 12, at 7:30 p.m. the Tourism Workers??? Cocktail Reception will be held at the Waterside Restaurant, St. Lawrence Gap. This event is by invitation only and will acknowledge workers??? contribution to the industry. Minister Sealy will give formal remarks.

On Friday, December 13, at 6:00 a.m. the BHTA will host a flash sale at its 4th Avenue Belleville St. Michael headquarters. Persons will be able to benefit from spot sales on staycations, attraction tours, meals at restaurants and other tourism products.

The official church service to recognise the start of the 2013 winter tourism season will be held at the St. Andrew Parish Church on Sunday, December 15, at 8:00 a.m. The Tourism Minister will also give brief remarks.

Later that day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the Barbados Heritage Tourism Artisan Festival will be held at George Washington House, Bush Hill, The Garrison, St. Michael.

Tourism Week will climax on Monday, December 16, with a Parade and Mini-Concert. The parade, which includes the Royal Barbados Police Force Band (RBPF), a detachment from the Mounted Branch and officers outfitted in Harbour Police uniform, will leave Jubilee Gardens at 10:00 a.m., and proceed along Broad Street.

It will culminate with a Bajan Dooflicky, featuring a Bajan wedding, and mini-concert at Heroes??? Square. Minister Sealy is expected to join the festivities at 11:30 a.m. to present a plaque to the RBPF band as well as give remarks.

Later that evening, the Barbados Garrison Historical Consortium Inc. will host Dinner with George, a dinner and theatrical experience at the George Washington House for 30 guests.

The activities are designed to increase tourism awareness among Barbadians as well as to encourage public involvement in the tourism industry.Other objectives of Tourism Week are recognising and celebrating the industry and its workers, highlighting the best people, products, services and practices within the sector and promoting service excellence.

While the activities cater to industry personnel and visitors, everyone is encouraged to participate.
