Barbadians are being encouraged to wear their parish colours this Independence.

This call has come from Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, Celia Toppin, during a hand-over ceremony of a sponsorship cheque for the Polo Shirt ID Programme at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex today.

Marketing and Communications Assistant of the Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited (ICBL), Damian Mascoll, presented Ms. Toppin with the cheque valued at $7,000.00.

Ms. Toppin noted that the programme was in existence since 1997, and pointed out that wearing parish colours was one way Barbadians could show national pride, as well as support the Parish Independence Committees, ambassadors and attendants.

Lauding the ICBL for their support, she said: ???ICBL has been a sponsor of the Polo Shirt ID Programme for over eight years and for that we are extremely grateful.

???We value your continued support to the Community Independence Celebrations programme because without the help of the corporate sector, it would be very difficult for us to achieve our objectives.

???I am sure ICBL understands the value of this programme and the work that it does in developing our young people and developing a sense of responsibility among communities,??? the Deputy Permanent Secretary emphasised.

Mr. Mascoll said his organisation ???has a soft spot for youth development???, as well as for impacting the lives of young people directly in a significant way.??

He insisted: ???We see our partnership with the Community Independence Celebrations Secretariat as a long-term one, as the organisation is making a meaningful contribution to developing the nation???s young people.???

Mr. Mascoll added that ICBL looked forward to Independence each year, and wished Barbadians and the Ambassadors the best for the season.

The Community Independence Celebrations culminate on Saturday, November 22, with the Spirit of the Nation Show at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
