Minister of Labour and Social Security, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo (FP)??

Barbadians are reminded to acquire their copy of Protocol Six, which was signed earlier this year by the Social Partnership, during May Day celebrations.

The reminder comes from Minister of Labour and Social Security, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, who made this call after a recently held meeting of the Social Partnership sub-committee, of which she is also the chairperson.??

Noting that all persons should be familiar with the document, particularly employers, employees and members of the union, she said that the information could be accessed online at http://www.labour.gov.bb/ or hard copies obtained from the Secretariat,???? which is located in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Protocol Six speaks to issues which are relevant to the social and economic development of this country and include: Barbados’ successful emergence from the current economic crisis and the desire to become "The Number One Entrepreneurial Hub in the World" by attracting investment in diversified sectors and the development of new skills; human development and the management of health issues, especially chronic diseases, recognising the link between good health and human and economic development; and the development of a knowledge-driven economy to encourage a culture of information sharing within and across all sectors.

It also focuses on environmental protection and the green economy, as well as initiatives that seek to reduce our carbon footprint.

The Social Partnership emerged out of the economic crisis of the early 1990s, after Government, along with Employers’ and Trade Union Representatives joined forces and signed the first protocol for the implementation of a Prices and Income Policy for the period 1993 to 1995. Protocol Six is expected to expire in 2013.??
