Emergency officials want Barbadians to talk among themselves about yesterday???s earthquake and implement response plans within their own communities.

This call is coming from Director of the Department of Emergency Management, Judy Thomas, who said while more people were aware of yesterday???s 6.7 magnitude earthquake off Barbados than they were in 2007, some were still not prepared.

Speaking during an afternoon press conference, Ms. Thomas said it was important that communities be prepared to respond in such situations. ???You need to be able to make an assessment at the home and local level and take action,??? she stressed.

The Director explained that the idea was to get residents in communities to know what was happening how they should shelter within their own homes and communities.

She added that able-bodied people would also need to take up the initial responsibility for their families and vulnerable people within the communities.
