Press conference and COVID-19 update with Minister of Health and Wellness, Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bostic. (April 5, 2020)

This country’s COVID-19 Czar, Richard Carter, is urging Barbadians to exercise good judgement to protect themselves and their families by being compliant with the 24-hour curfew period, and help Government and healthcare professionals contain the spread of the virus.

He made this appeal today at Ilaro Court during a press conference to give a COVID-19 update.

Mr. Carter reminded the public that the Minister responsible for National Security had given specific instructions to the Royal Barbados Police Force, ably supported by the Barbados Defence Force, that the law prohibiting the gathering of more than three persons is obeyed and the directive carried out.

“We have also appealed to the good sense of Barbadians to protect themselves and their families.  In every instance, you will see persons who are prepared to defy laws and regulations, and I am assured that the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF) is taking action against those individuals when identified, and taking action in relation to the observation of the curfew,” he pointed out.

Mr. Carter disclosed that he was stopped and “challenged” by the police during the curfew period and asked to produce identification to validate his reason for being on the road.  On showing his pass to law enforcement, he was allowed to continue on his journey.

The COVID-19 Czar reiterated that the above scenario is all part of the ongoing efforts by the RBPF and security officials that we “do require the compliance and observance of the requirements of keeping off the road from ordinary Barbadians”.
