The walkers are on their way in the World Food Day 5 km Walk, which started at Bay Street, St. Michael. (A.Skeete/BGIS)

Last Saturday’s overcast skies could not dampen the spirits of the group of walkers who braved the inclement weather to take part in this year’s World Food Day 5km walk.

The group, joined by staff and friends of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Water Resource Management, started off from the Bay Street Esplanade at just past 6:00 a.m. to make the trek along Bush Hill, Dalkeith Road, Brittons Hill, Culloden Road, Belleville, Belmont Road, Martindales Road, and Jemmotts Lane, to finish at Bay Street.

Chairman of the World Food Day Organising Committee and Deputy Chief Agricultural Officer (Livestock), Charleston Lucas, said the focus of the event was not about competition, but to bring awareness to the plight of vulnerable persons across the globe who have little or no access to proper and wholesome food.

He also hoped that through activities such as the walk, more Barbadians would be sensitised to issues which impact food security and production, and he encouraged more persons to start growing their own food.

It is estimated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations that some 870 million persons worldwide, that is, one in eight persons or 12.5 per cent of the world’s population, are suffering from hunger.

World Food Day will be observed tomorrow, Tuesday, October 16, under the theme Agricultural Cooperatives: Key to Feeding the World.??

On that day, a Farmer’s Cooperative Expo/Plant Clinic will take place on the grounds of the St. George Parish Church, running from 11:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

During the day, patrons will have the opportunity to purchase agricultural produce and goods, learn more about agricultural services and products, and how to care for plants, among many other activities.

Information will also be available on cooperatives through the Cooperatives Department of the Ministry of Commerce and Trade and several cooperatives will be on hand to showcase their work.

All Barbadians are invited to attend the expo, particularly those from the surrounding districts.
