Barbados has elevated itself as a world leader in ???good environmental governance???.??

This is the belief of Minister of the Environment and Drainage, Dr. Denis Lowe, who was speaking to the press after the launch of the Schools??? Fruit Tree Planting Initiative at St. Christopher???s Primary School this morning.

Dr. Lowe said that all Barbadians should be proud that the country had been given the opportunity to host the Global World Environment Day celebrations.

He believed that the opportunity showed that the island was moving in the right direction in terms of maintaining a sustainable and viable environment.

In addition, the Environment Minister was of the opinion that Barbados has been a ???star performer??? in its effort to mitigate the effects of climate change.

?????? We have been doing a leading job in rehabilitating our coastlines in putting infrastructure in place like our boardwalks … to scale back the impact of climate change by sea level rise and erratic weather that results in flooding.

???I think Barbados has a great opportunity to work with the region in that area, because we have now demonstrated the skills to perform the kind of work that is required to protect our coastal areas,??? he added.
