Barbados and the Republic of Botswana formally established diplomatic relations on, Wednesday December 20, 2006, with the signing of a Joint Communiqué by Dr. Christopher Hackett, Permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nation and Mr. Samuel Otsile Outlule, Permanent Representative of Botswana to the United Nations.

In the Communiqué, both countries expressed their desire to further strengthen relations between them on the basis of sovereign equality among states, mutual respect, self-determination and territorial integrity. They further committed to developing bilateral relations in different fields of interest to both countries.

Speaking upon the signing of the Communiqué, both Permanent Representatives observed that close and friendly relations have always existed between Barbados and Botswana, and expressed the hope that the formal establishment of diplomatic relations would facilitate further cooperation for the mutual benefit of both countries.

Special attention was drawn to the recent visits to Barbados and Botswana by the President of Botswana and the Prime Minister of Barbados respectively, as well as visits by delegations from each country to the 40th independence anniversary celebrations in both countries.

The signing ceremony was held at the Permanent Mission of Botswana in New York and was witnessed by the diplomatic staff attached to both Missions.
