Barbados and Korea have pledged to strengthen their existing relations and to forge closer ties in other areas.?? Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Barbados, Hwang won-Kun, gave this assurance during a recent meeting at Ilaro Court.

Mr. Stuart said that there was scope for the deepening of the relationship which were initially established over three decades ago.?? "We established formal diplomatic relations in 1977, and ever since then, we have enjoyed a very stable relationship.?? Therefore, there is much scope for the deepening of those ties because we share democratic values," he noted.

Cognisant of Korea’s thrust to promote a green economy, the Prime Minister alluded to Barbados and the region’s efforts in this regard. "Barbados has been very vocal in pushing the issues of green growth. So, I see the interest of Korea and Barbados coinciding and that is a basis on which we can work more closely together," Mr. Stuart remarked.

In turn, Ambassador Hwang impressed with the island’s picturesque landscape, also mentioned plans to promote Barbados as an ideal holiday destination for Koreans, as an impetus to strengthening the relationship.

In welcoming the suggestion, the Prime Minister reiterated that tourism was the island’s leading sector and added: "We welcome tourists from wherever we can get them, and I would be delighted to see more Koreans coming to this part of the world," he stressed.
