Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has underscored the importance of Barbados and Martinique strengthening their relations.

Ms. Mottley made the comments on Thursday when the President of the Collectivité Territoriale de Martinique (CTM), Alfred Marie-Jeanne, paid her a courtesy call, at Government Headquarters.

The Prime Minister said: “I want to deepen the relationship between the two countries in functional and concrete ways that will benefit our people.”  She identified health, vocational training, energy, tourism cooperation and seismic monitoring as critical areas for cooperation.

She pointed out that Government wanted more children here to become bilingual, and suggested that there should be more foreign language exchanges between the two countries during the summer.

Mr. Marie-Jeanne agreed, saying that it was important to forge linkages, so both countries could become stronger together.

Those attending the courtesy call included Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Jerome Walcott; Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Alies Jordan; and CTM’s Director of Coordination for External Affairs, Communication and Public Policy Evaluation and Planning, Maguy Marie-Jeanne.

President of the CTM, Mr. Marie-Jeanne, who is participating in the 68th Meeting of the OECS Authority, being held on February 14 and 15, in St. Kitts & Nevis, was in Barbados for a few hours.
