Barbados and the State of Qatar formally established diplomatic relations on Tuesday, December 4, with the signing of a Joint Communiqué by Dr. Christopher Hackett, Permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nations and his Qatar counterpart, Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser.

In the Communiqué, both countries expressed their desire to further strengthen relations on the basis of mutual respect for territorial integrity and non-intervention in the internal affairs of each other. They also pledged to uphold the norms of international law and the objectives and principles of the United Nations…Charter.

Speaking upon the signing, Ambassador Hackett said that the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries “opened up great prospects for deeper cooperation at both the bilateral and multilateral levels”.

Dr. Hackett also said that Barbados would be particularly interested in concluding a double taxation agreement with the State of Qatar given the emphasis this country placed on the development of its services and financial sectors.

In response, Qatar’s Ambassador agreed that both countries “had a lot to share with each other, particularly in the areas of development.” Mr. Al-Nasser also expressed his pleasure at having the opportunity to greet a Barbados delegation in Qatar which he considered would be an important practical step in formalising the relationship between Barbados and Qatar.

The signing ceremony was held at the Permanent Mission of Qatar in New York and was witnessed by the diplomatic staff attached to both Missions.
