Barbados and Thailand have expressed interest in cooperating in agriculture, culture and manufacturing, as well as in having resident representation in each country.

This was revealed yesterday during a courtesy call by Thailand’s Ambassador to Canada, Snanchart Devahastin, and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Christopher Sinckler.

Ambassador Devahastin, noting that there were many opportunities for cooperation between the two countries, said he had seen the potential for technical cooperation and expertise in producing crops such as cassava, and ornamental and pot plants.?? He also expressed interest in Barbados’ sea-island cotton.

The Ambassador added it was his intention to propose to his Ministry of Foreign Affairs that there be representatives resident here. "We can consider opening a consulate and also appoint honorary representatives to help strengthen our relations and facilitate the provision of visas," he remarked.

Agreeing that there was a need for greater collaboration between the two nations, Minister Sinckler said Barbados would welcome technical assistance, especially in manufacturing and in transforming the sugar industry. He also suggested that there should be an exchange in the area of culture, particularly in the preservation of historical artifacts.????

The two officials also discussed the possibility of having a double taxation agreement.

Barbados and Thailand established diplomatic relations on November 22, 1988.
