The Barbados Cadet Corps and the Nottinghamshire Army Cadet Force of the United Kingdom came out on top at the recently concluded International Cadet Challenge Camp.
Both countries received 1,120 points and shared first place, while Dominica placed third with 1,030 points, Cayman Islands received 935 and came fourth, and St. Vincent took the fifth position with 925 points.
Addressing a closing ceremony for the nine-day camp yesterday at the Prince Cave Auditorium, District "A" Police Station, Minister of Youth, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, described it as an excellent way to bring out the best in the young people of the Caribbean and the world.
Dr. Byer Suckoo said: "I understand that the competition was fierce, but that it was also friendly. And, that is the point, we must strive for excellence, but we must also be our brother’s keeper in the process and we must respect and care about each other."
The Minister told the cadets that they were all winners, especially since they had chosen to be of service to their countries. "When I consider the options, and I see those options played out on our streets, I congratulate you," she stated.
She also lauded the Barbados Cadet Corps, contending that its efforts to continue developing the island’s young people to become productive citizens had not gone unrewarded and its numbers were continuing to grow.
There are currently 21 Units at government secondary schools, along with an independent unit which caters to the private secondary schools and Springer Memorial School, as well as Sea Cadet, Medical and Shooting programmes which serve the various interests of the youth.
