Barbados and Chile have agreed to ramp up their relationship following a meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Dr. Jerome Walcott, and Chile’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andres Allamand.

The meeting took place on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly, whose high-level segment opened last week.

Minister Walcott and his Chilean counterpart agreed that there was scope for closer cooperation between the two countries, in particular in the areas of training and disaster management.

The two sides are expected to meet again before the end of the year to identify the specifics of the enhanced cooperation programme

Minister Walcott who was in New York accompanying Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley at the United Nations General Assembly, held a number of bilateral meetings with his global counterparts.

Barbados and Chile established diplomatic relations in 1967 and have enjoyed close relations. Prime Minister Mottley met with Chile’s President, Sebastien Pinera in 2018 and former Chilean President, Michelle Bachelet visited Barbados in 2017.
