The Government of Barbados is currently developing an itinerary of projects that would lay the foundation for a new era of cooperation between this country and the People’s Republic of China.

Noting that this follows the official visit of Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to China in June last year, Ambassador of Barbados to the People’s Republic of China, Sir Lloyd Erskine Sandiford, stated that these projects "would engage the diplomatic interests of the Ambassadors of both countries".

He made these comments during a courtesy call today with the new Ambassador-designate of China to Barbados, Mr. XU Hong, at the Barbados Embassy in Beijing.

The former Barbadian Prime Minister also pointed out that since this country’s independence on November 30, 1966, "The guiding tenets of Barbados’ foreign policy have been the maintenance of its sovereignty and independence; safeguarding its peace and security; protecting its democracy and human rights; and the pursuit of its human development and economic growth".

Ambassador Xu, who is expected to commence his tour of duty to Barbados at the beginning of April, expressed pleasure at his new appointment and outlined that he was looking forward to further cementing relations between China and Barbados.??

Barbados and China established diplomatic relations in May 1977.????
