Barbados is continuing its efforts to maintain and encourage human rights by drafting legislation to combat sexual harassment, among other measures.

This was underscored by Minister of Labour and Social Security, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, as she met with Advisor at the Human Rights Unit of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Karen McKenzie, during a courtesy call today at the Ministry, Warrens, St. Michael.

Dr. Byer Suckoo mentioned that Government was presently engaged in drafting legislation on sexual harassment in the workplace and welcomed feedback from all concerned, in particular males in the society.

The Labour Minister added that anti-discrimination legislation was also being examined as it pertained to HIV/AIDS, with the hope of expanding it to include race, nationality, gender and persons with disabilities.

In turn, Ms. McKenzie noted that her organisation assisted states in developing their national human rights mechanisms and ensuring that the framework for human rights was implemented in schools and that persons with disabilities were accommodated in society. She added that coming out of these consultations recommendations for best practices in each country would be made and technical assistance provided where necessary.

Ms. McKenzie is in Barbados for a two-day Universal Periodic Review seminar to be staged from tomorrow, Tuesday, June 28 to Wednesday, June 29 at the Savannah Hotel.
