Barbados is playing its part in contributing to a new international climate agreement, to be presented at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference in Paris, France, in December.

To this end, stakeholders from across the island came together on Wednesday to participate in a workshop on Barbados??? Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), at the Hilton Barbados Resort.

Highlighting some key issues to be considered while finalising Barbados??? INDC, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Drainage, Edison Alleyne, stated that the report should provide ???a clear signal to the general public, the private sector and ???. the international community, that Barbados is serious about moving towards a low carbon, resource-efficient green economy???.

???Strong ownership and buy-in from all government institutions, the private sector and the wider public in defining and agreeing on targets and implementation arrangements are prerequisites for successful implementation of the INDC,??? he indicated.

He reminded participants that it was important to promote the participation and consideration of the private sector and the general public in all aspects of the INDC implementation, especially in the energy and transport sectors, as ???that is where most of our future emissions are expected???.

The Permanent Secretary also encouraged participants to build on previous studies, data and targets like the Draft National Climate Change Policy, and reminded them that although the INDC was country-specific, there were still some global targets that had to be considered.

Consultants Aether and Ricardo ??? E&E have been commissioned to support the development of Barbados??? INDC. The group will work closely with the project team and various stakeholders in the island to collect and compile the relevant data, which would then be presented to key players next Wednesday, September 16.
