Minister of Health, Donville Inniss

Health Minister, Donville Inniss and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Joy St. John, will represent Barbados this week at a two-day Health Council of Human and Social Development (COHSOD) meeting in Georgetown, Guyana.

The conference, which will be held from Friday, April, 15 to Saturday, April 16, will address a number of regional health issues, including Caribbean cooperation in health and the monitoring of regional and national progress in a number of areas.

While there, the Barbados delegation will share its plans regarding the schools nutrition policy in support of Chronic Non-Communicable Disease (CNCD) control.??

Officials will also hear about the achievements of the region in accordance with the 15-point Port of Spain Declaration on CNCDs, adopted by the CARICOM Heads of Government in 2007.?? Moreover, the health leaders are expected to address the critical gaps in the implementation of the strategy and urge the CARICOM Secretariat and the Pan American Health Organisation to assist the Member States with the establishment and strengthening of the mechanisms for the development and implementation of national strategic plans in this regard.

In addition, a report on progress towards the UN High-Level Meeting on Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (CNCDs), to be held from September 19-20 in New York, will also be given.????

HIV and AIDS proposals from the Feasibility Study on the Health Insurance Mechanism, the Regional Drug Demand Reduction Programme, the introduction of drug treatment courts and the inclusion of drug education into the curricula of Caribbean Universities, will be among some of the other topics to be discussed.
