This country’s Minister of Community Development and Culture, Steven Blackett, will head a seven-man official delegation to CARIFESTA X, the region’s premier arts and music festival, which comes off in Georgetown, Guyana, from August 22-31.

The group includes Permanent Secretary in the Culture Ministry, Shirley Farnum; Chief Executive Officer of the National Cultural Foundation (NCF), Devere Browne; Chairman of the NCF, Ken Knight; and NCF board member, Dr Gladstone Yearwood.

The cultural extravaganza is designed to showcase the talents of the Caribbean region’s artistes and performers.

During the 10 day event, the South American country is expected to come alive with fashion, music, dance and the best in literary arts. A team of 85 of Barbados’ talented artistes are expected to exhibit their work in disciplines such as film, visual arts, theatre and dance before hundreds of patrons.

The audience will also be thrilled with tuk band music, as well as the sweet strains of calypso by the likes of reigning calypso monarch, Adrian Clarke; former monarch, John King; Desmond “Fowl” Weekes, a leading proponent of ‘spouge music’; Chad Bowen; and this year’s  junior calypso monarch in the 8 to 12 category, Myles Gittens.

In the area of dance, choreographed pieces by NCF’s Cultural Officer for dance, Ian Douglas; John Hunte; Sophia Mounter; and Michael Taitt will be performed by a team of 16 dancers.

The catwalk will come alive with designs by Trinity Fashion World, Wayne Smith, and Fifth Element, among others.

Poets Deanne Kennedy and Adrian Green “will fly” the Bajan flag high in the area of literary arts.
