Minister of Social Care, Christopher Sinckler,??listens??attentively to Brazil’s??Ambassador to Barbados, Appio Claudio Acquarone during a courtesy call at the Ministry.

Barbados is very interested in the Bolsa Familia Programme, an anti-poverty strategy used by Brazil.

Minister of Social Care, Christopher Sinckler, made this known today, during a courtesy call by that country’s Ambassador to Barbados, Appio Claudio Acquarone.

Stating that both countries had a lot in common and shared similar interests, Mr. Sinckler noted that using that programme, Brazil had been successful in moving its citizens out of poverty, and suggested that it could be adapted to suit Barbados. He added that the Ministry was committed to lifting people out of poverty on a sustainable basis and would also be considering other programmes for Barbados.

Ambassador Acquarone said his country was very interested in sharing this programme with other countries and would seek to provide Barbados with further details.?? He revealed that Bolsa Familia had been responsible for the elevation between social/economic classes there, and had started as "a very simple thought and remained simple in its operation."

The Bolsa Familia Programme was created by Brazil’s Federal Government in 2003.?? It is part of the Zero Hunger strategy "which aims to ensure the right to adequate food, promoting food security and nutrition, contributing to the eradication of extreme poverty and the attainment of citizenship by the portion of the population most vulnerable to hunger."
