Barbados will continue to support the call for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.??

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean, made this assertion during a courtesy call from Israel’s Ambassador to Barbados, Amiram Magid, today at her Ministry’s headquarters on Culloden Road, St. Michael.

Stating that Barbados’s stance was one of justice and fairness, Minister McClean stressed that Barbados would continue to maintain friendly relations with Israel.

Matters of security and agriculture were also major topics of discussion.?? The Israeli envoy noted that his country was willing to provide training and technical assistance in security, which he said would be beneficial to the island’s police force.

In turn, Minister McClean remarked that security was a very important area for Barbados and its neighbouring islands, since the region was vulnerable to both gun and drug trafficking.?? She added that the two activities contributed to violence and other crimes. "Any assistance we can receive in that area would be appreciated," she said.

Food Security was identified as another priority area and Ambassador Magid pointed out that many countries depended heavily on imported food.?? He encouraged Barbados to continue to explore options to sustain its food basket locally through agriculture.

The Foreign Affairs Minister said that the island was cognisant of this and through the Ministry of Agriculture, numerous farmers and agribusiness operators were working assiduously to help reduce the island’s import bill.

Moreover, she thanked the Ambassador for the several training courses offered to Barbadians, noting that many persons and sectors benefited from those opportunities.

Some of the training courses from which Barbadians have benefited include: Media Strategies for Social Change, Profiles of Trafficking: Patterns, Populations & Policies, and Integrated Pest Management. Training was also provided in agriculture, natural and environmental disaster management, urban economic development and post-harvest biology.
