Barbados has been praised as one of the Caribbean countries "whose progressive efforts over the years have achieved great outcomes".
This was emphasised by Member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) – Tianjin Municipal Committee, Zhang Gaoli, during a courtesy call on President of the Senate, Kerri-Ann Ifill, and Speaker of the House of Assembly, Michael Carrington, at Parliament in Bridgetown today.
Stating that he was immensely impressed with the island’s ecological system, its clean environment, lush vegetation and white, sandy beaches, Mr. Zhang praised Government for its firm commitment to the One China Policy.
The leader of the high-level Chinese political delegation currently on tour in Barbados pointed out that his country was seeking to enhance political trust, trade, and economic cooperation between both nations.??
Mr. Zhang stressed that to accomplish this goal, it was critical that friendly and cooperative relations were increased, as well as more frequent people-to-people exchanges.
President of the Senate, Senator Kerri-Ann Ifill, welcomed Mr. Zhang and his delegation to Parliament, stating she was intrigued by the Chinese culture.

She pointed out that 35 years of diplomatic ties between Barbados and China was evidence that this island was pleased with the relationship.

Speaker of the House of Assembly, Michael Carrington, also welcomed Mr. Zhang’s sentiments.??
He said that, in spite of the size of the Barbadian economy and the country’s limited resources, this island maintained good governance over the years and welcomed the opportunity for further cooperation with China.
Noting that Barbadians understood the world in which they lived, Mr. Carrington explained that Barbados’ commitment to the One-China Policy formed the basis of the relationship between the two nations.
The Chinese delegation also paid a courtesy call on the Leader of the Opposition, Owen Arthur, at his office in Parliament.
Reiterating this island’s commitment to that Asian country, Mr. Arthur said he was pleased with the interest that the Chinese continued to show in Barbados.??
The Chinese delegation also called on Prime Minister, Fruendel Stuart and Governor General, Sir Elliott Belgrave.?? Following the meets, they toured the Cheapside Market and the Barbados Cruise Terminal.??
