The Ministry of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship has relaunched the Smart Energy Barbados 2030 website – the official information hub for the Barbados National Energy Policy (BNEP) 2019-2030.

The website, www.smartenergybarbados.com, has been created to motivate Barbadians to assist Government in realising the national goal of being 100% renewable by 2030, and to educate the public about the BNEP.

In making the announcement, Programme Manager for the Project Execution Unit in the Ministry of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Keisha Reid, explained that the interactive website would include information on critical renewable energy targets, and tips on how to become an “energy champion”.

She pointed out that the island needed energy champions to achieve the 2030 goal, and the public would find a list of practical energy recommendations for homes and businesses, tips on using energy efficient appliances and electric vehicles, as well as other useful advice.

Ms. Reid also touched on the jobs and training opportunities available when the island achieves the 100 per cent renewable energy target.

“To support careers in the sector, the Energy Division has developed a Smart Energy Educational catalogue, which identifies locally available educational options related to the renewable energy sector. The online catalogue contains courses available at tertiary institutions, including the University of the West Indies, the Barbados Community College, Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology and the Barbados Vocational Training Board.

“With this detailed information in one location, it is easier for prospective students to grow professionally and technically in the world of renewable energy and energy efficiency,” she stated.

Another item to be found on the website is the Smart Energy Podcast series, hosted by Tracy Fowler.  Various experts, along with Minister of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Kerrie Symmonds, discuss a range of issues about the sector.

From the podcast series, Ms. Reid said listeners can learn more about BNEP’s goals, how they will be achieved, and the many ways in which Barbadians will benefit.
