Barbados??? Ambassador to the People???s Republic of China (PRC), Dr. Chelston Brathwaite, arrived in Beijing on February 19.
He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Rosanna Brathwaite. They were welcomed at the airport by officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the PRC and staff of the Embassy of Barbados in Beijing.
Dr. Brathwaite met with Deputy Director of the Protocol Department of MOFA of the PRC, Mr. Wang Zhijian, on February 20, and presented him with copies of his credentials, as the first step of his accreditation in China. The formal presentation of credentials to President Xi Jinping is expected to take place in March.
On February 21, Ambassador Brathwaite met with Director General of the Latin American and Caribbean Department of MOFA, Ambassador Shen Zhiliang, and Ambassadors Brathwaite and Shen exchanged views on the state of relations between their two countries. They look forward to further strengthening the relationship and to a number of activities during 2014.
These include the China-Caribbean Consultations, which Barbados is due to host later this year, as well as the China-Caribbean Trade and Economic Cooperation Forum, scheduled to take place in China during the course of 2014. Cooperation in the area of agriculture, renewable energy and tourism was also discussed.
In March 2014, Ambassador Brathwaite will welcome to Beijing a delegation of some 20 representatives of the Barbados public and private sectors, led by Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation, Dr. Leroy McClean. The delegation will be participating in the first seminar organised specifically for Barbados by the Ministry of Commerce of the PRC to facilitate and encourage commercial and economic relations between Barbados and China.
