Barbados remains committed to developing the abilities of its potential world-class athletes, as well as establishing a culture of healthy living among its citizenry.
This assertion came yesterday from Minister of Sports, Stephen Lashley, while addressing the Barbados Workers’ Union’s (BWU) 2010 Netball Tournament at the Netball Stadium.
Mr. Lashley said the availability of opportunities for athletes to actively engage in competition, especially in the off-season, was of "paramount importance" to attaining the standard of world-class.
??He proffered the view that the netball tournament was one such channel through which the athletes could develop their skills, and expressed his Ministry’s support for the competition.
The Minister continued: "I, therefore, hope that this 2010 netball season will engender a spirit of camaraderie and communal commitment that transcends the boundaries of this tournament, to facilitate the nurturing of raw, unearthed sporting talent and to positively impact a healthy lifestyle culture across Barbados."
Mr. Lashley commended the BWU for the work the organisation had done over the years in developing netball and vowed to create a closer working relationship with the Union in the area of sport.
Korrec Auto Ballers was judged the Best Team on Parade, with the Barbados Prison Service placing second and Kings Park taking the third spot. The Barbados Prison Service also won a trophy for the Best Banner, while Newbury Ballerz placed second.??saustin@barbados.gov.bb
