Thunder, lightning and rain did not deter over 200 runners and walkers from the Barbados Defence Force and a few civilians from participating in the 2013 Ironman Hillaby ???Apex??? Race last Sunday morning.

The race, which was the final event of six in the Chief of Staff Champion Unit Competition, started just outside Rock Hall Pavilion, St. Thomas, and proceeded downhill towards the junction at Highway 2A and Rock Hall.

Competitors then made a right turn on to Highway 2A, before making another right turn up Plumtree Road. The walkers made a right turn at Farmers, continued past Dunscombe and made their way back to the finish at the Rock Hall Playing Field, while the runners continued from Farmers up to Hillaby, and returned towards Farmers, Dunscombe and back to the finish at Rock Hall Playing Field.

The winning unit was determined by the first 10 finishers from that group. The Barbados Regiment had its first 10 finishers placing in the top 19 overall finishers to capture the Ironman ???Apex??? Race Unit Title.

The two Units of the BDF – the Barbados Regiment and the Barbados Coast Guard – compete against each other annually in a mixture of military and sports skills for the Chief of Staff Champion Unit Award.

This year, the Barbados Coast Guard Unit was only able to capture one of the six titles, namely the Inter Unit Swimming Championship. The Barbados Regiment completed its fifth victory by capturing the Ironman Hillaby ???Apex??? Race. The other victories came in the Endurance Competition, the 24 Mile Relay, the Force Weapons Meet, and the Paddle Race.
