Key issues and challenges faced in education in the Commonwealth, will be discussed when the 17th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (CCEM) gets under way today in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones, will represent Barbados at the Conference, which runs from June 15 to 19.

Under the theme "Education in the Commonwealth: Toward and Beyond Global Goals and Targets," the meeting will facilitate discussion on progress across the Commonwealth on the achievement of the global education initiatives, specifically the Millennium Development Goals and Education for All.?? The theme will provide a platform for discussion on issues of relevance to the diverse membership of the Commonwealth.

Delegates will also be examining issues and challenges facing education beyond the scope and timeline of global targets with emphasis on three sub-themes: Education for National Development and Capacity Building, Towards and Beyond Global Goals and Targets: Narrowing the Gap in Education and Quality Education for All: and Meeting Emerging Challenges across the Commonwealth.

The first Commonwealth Education Ministers Conference was held in Oxford, United Kingdom, in 1959.?? The CCEM is held every three years.
